Andy Pandy Dies
Andy Pandy, the star of British children's television series that premiered on BBC TV in summer 1950, has died at the age of 75.
Andy, the marionette who lived in a picnic basket, was later joined by Teddy, a teddy bear, and Looby Loo, a rag doll, who would appear when Andy and Teddy weren't around.
All three lived in the same picnic basket. At the time it was considered a metaphor for a multi racial society.
Initially the programmes were transmitted live, but Andy, unaware of Looby Loo’s existence, felt he was going mad and hearing singing voices. He felt he was going (in his words) “Looby Laa” and his behaviour started to become unacceptable at the BBC.
He was finally dismissed in 1973, after turning up to the studio, out of his skull on a cocktail of Absinthe, Shoe Polish & Um Bongo.
Andy spent the rest of his career as a door stop in Newport Pagnal Bus station.
The funeral is next Thursday.
